Assistant Director of Multilingual Learner Education
General Description: In collaboration with the Multilingual Learner Education Director and
Somerville High School MLE Department Chair, provide instructional leadership and management of programming that provides best practices and supports for Multilingual Learners to achieve at their highest potential.
Specific Duties
Provides leadership for MLE Programs and services for Limited English Proficient
students including the following:
Provide support and supervision to Multilingual Learner Education staff in the delivery of ESL, SEI, and Dual Language Instruction;
Evaluate Multilingual Learner Education staff in conjunction with School Principals and MLE
Director in alignment with state and district Educator Evaluation guidelines;
Coordinate district-developed and common assessment systems to monitor progress of Multilingual Learners towards language proficiencies;
Provide guidance and expertise in MTSS and referral process and instructional interventions for Multilingual Learners;
Monitor data maintenance and conduct data analysis using shared data tools;
Collect and manage teacher resources for the development of collaborative and instructional practices;
Oversee the adoption and alignment of ESL curriculum materials, ensure fidelity to ESL
and Sheltered Content unit development, lesson planning and best instructional practice;
Oversee the adoption and alignment of Dual Language curriculum materials, ensure
fidelity to Dual Language unit implementation, lesson planning, and best instructional practices;
Provide technical support in the implementation of the local, state, and federal assessment of ELL/LEP students and required reporting;
Collaborate with school-based teams to organize ACCESS testing and other language proficiency assessments and progress monitoring systems;
Engage in Data Review and Analysis including student progress audit;
Collaborate with School Principals, and School Improvement Councils, ILT, Equity
Specialists and MLE Department Leadership in developing improvement goals in relation to Multilingual Learner Education and plans to reach the goals;
Collaborate with community partners to bring resources (tutoring, volunteers, mentorship) to Multilingual Learners and their families;
Engage with University Partners and assist in the placement and supervision of student
teachers;
Participate in MLE Leadership Team and Educator/Administrator Leadership meetings;
Convene and facilitate Multilingual Learner Team Meetings, PLCs, and Professional
Development and professional development initiatives in the delivery of ESL, SEI, and Dual Language Instruction;
Provide guidance, training, and professional development for the Enrollment Office for new student language screening, assessment, and student placement;
Collaborate and provide guidance to educators for effective communication with families and community members;
Provides consultation to the Enrollment Center regarding Multilingual Learner Student assessment and student placement;
Participates in DESE sponsored ELL initiatives (WIDA Curriculum Alignment; SEI/ Bilingual
Endorsement; Seal of Biliteracy);
Ensures that ML student data and related forms meet state and federal compliance criteria;
Collaborates in annual Language Acquisition Teams to review student data and placement;
Coordinates Multilingual Learner Parent Advisory Council (ML PAC) with members to support the MLE Department goals; and
Performs other tasks assigned by the Superintendent or designee.
Qualifications
Possession of a Master’s Degree;
Massachusetts licensure as a Teacher of ELL or ESL as well as Supervisor/Director;
Minimum of eight years ESL teaching or ESL administrative experience;
Strong leadership skills and a deep commitment to improving the quality of public education in urban communities;
Demonstrated commitment to removing barriers for Multilingual Learners to succeed at the highest level and closing proficiency gaps;
Knowledge of research-based instruction and assessment practices for Multilingual
Learners, including students with limited/ interrupted formal education (SLIFE);
Experienced with analysis and use of data to improve student learning and strong accountability orientation;
Experienced with federal and state English Language Learners regulations and compliance to monitor and ensure that all functions are consistent with department vision, goals, and policies, as well as, DESE regulations;
Capacity to communicate effectively with diverse populations.
