In-depth knowledge and skills in laboratory settings with technical experience in reagent preparation, chemical techniques, development and promotion of safety culture, laboratory safety, chemical safety and storage and hazardous waste disposal. Competent in working with chemicals to include chemical ordering, receipt, classification, use, storage and disposal in compliance with regulations.
Duties and Responsibilities
The position brings together managerial skills and knowledge of safety and lab procedures to ensure that laboratories operate smoothly. Support and facilitate daily lab activities.
Managerial duties generally include preparation of labs and maintaining security of chemicals and equipment. Track and maintain key inventories.
Collaborate with faculty members in designing and implementing lab activities. Report regularly to Chair on Discretionary Fund. Provide assistance with the University/School of Science tax-free alcohol program.
Review building needs and act a liaison to University Building Services for upkeep and maintenance. Serve as a representative to the Virginia Tidewater Consortium for Higher EducationEnvironmental Health and Safety Program Managers Committee. Serve on Ad-Hoc and Departmental Committees to include, but not limited to Departmental Hospitality Committee.
Conducting chemical safety training for faculty and staff, maintaining computer updates and software installation for the department, and maintaining instrumentation. Preparing teaching materials for laboratory instruction. Ensuring laboratory safety in teaching and research laboratories.
Requirements
A bachelor's degree in Chemistry or a laboratory-related area required and several years of experience are recommended. Training in DOT/RCRA and OSHA Lab standard is also recommended. Working knowledge of lab instrumentation and techniques is highly advantageous.
Qualifications
Proficient at providing technical assistance and support for technology use in chemical education. Experienced in information technology to include desktop support, TCP/IP network connections, OS and application software installation, configuration and troubleshooting, web page design and development and problem solving. Serve as HU IT Admin contact for the Department. Provide AV support as needed. Interface with Help Desk, Computer Center, university network personnel and departmental personnel to implement policies and solve technical problems.
