Position overview
Brightcove’s Research is a team of highly motivated, fast-paced, and highly skilled engineers with expertise in video processing and video streaming systems. We develop highly innovative, state-of-the-art technologies for use in future Brightcove products. We also contribute to relevant activities in standards and industry organizations (IETF, W3C, MPEG, DASH-IF, CTA-WAVE, UHDF, SVTA), file patent applications, and publish in technical conferences and journals.
Examples of mass-deployed technologies that originated as research projects include Brightcove Context-Aware Encoding and massively-parallel transcoding engine in Zencoder. Both are Emmy award-winning technologies.
For our R&D project in the domain of multi-CDN streaming, we seek a candidate with the following qualifications and responsibilities:
Job Responsibilities
Lead a team of engineers that will design and implement an automated multi-CDN configuration and management service, optimizing media delivery for specific requirements and business logic for different CDNs / regions / categories of receiving devices / content sources
Guide architecture discussions and translate them into internal documents, development plans, and actions.
Plan and coordinate all phases of development activities associated with this project
Plan and coordinate internal testing and validation process, ensuring validity, robustness, scalability, and effectiveness of the emerging solution.
Plan and coordinate filed trials or the solution
Plan and coordinate transition of the developed solution and the project from research/validation phase to product and operations
Work with product management, engineering, and other departments across the company to ensure success of this project
Follow technical developments in the domain of streaming and traffic routing optimizations in relevant standards, industry and academic venues and forums (IETF, SVTA, DASH-IF, IEEE and ACM conferences, etc.).
Provide guidance on future evolutions of this service, or towards defining new advanced technology projects in same domain.
Ability to motivate the team, ability to go hands on when necessary, provide guidance and mentoring.
Qualifications/Experience
MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related fields
10-12 years of experience in design or operations of CDNs or CDN-based media delivery systems
5 years of experience managing development teams, while driving passion, motivation, collaboration and positive behaviors within teams
Knowledge of IP networking fundamentals (routing, TCP, DNS, HTTP, HTTPS, etc.)
Expert knowledge of CND architectures, options, and configurations (prior practical experience working with Akamai, CloudFront, Fastly and/or other major CDNs is a must)
Extensive experience with development and deployment of services/products using AWS. Understanding of performance limits AWS services (S3, ELB, Lambdas, queues, databases, etc.).
Experience with development and deployment of services/products using Edge platforms or Edge functions provided by CDNs (e.g., AWS Lambda@Edge, CloudFront Functions, Akamai EdgeWorkers, Fastly Compute@Edge, etc.).
Knowledge of DASH and HLS – based streaming systems, their practical deployments, and feature sets supported by different clients / platforms.
Experience development and deployment of products using multiple languages and environments (C/C , Go, Java, NodeJS, Python, etc.)
Experience working with CI/CD tools (CircleCI, TeamCity, Travis, Jenkins, etc.)
Experience with cloud monitoring and performance tracking tools (CloudHealth, DataDog, etc.)
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Additional/Desirable skills
Advanced knowledge of DASH and HLS standards and related deployment guidelines (Apple HLS guidelines, DASH-IF IOPs, DVB-DASH, CTA 5001-C, etc.)
Understanding of Low-Latency variants of DASH, HLS and CMAF, and their impact on design of origin servers, and means of switching between sources of streams.
Knowledge of means for carriage of subtitles, SCTE35, and other metadata in OTT systems
Knowledge of ISOBMFF, CMAF, and MP2TS file formats and streams
Experience working with DRM technologies
Experience working with streaming clients and related stacks in web browsers (MSE, EME, etc.)
