Job Summary and Scope

The Director of Rehabilitation Services (DOR) promotes and restores patient health and function through the leadership, administration, clinical planning, development, and operations of the rehabilitation program in collaboration with medical providers, a multidisciplinary team of healthcare providers, and SRMC organizational leadership. The DOR will provide oversight of all departmental daily operations and have budgetary responsibility for all Rehabilitation Services. The DOR will have leadership over all inpatient and outpatient provision of care for Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, and Speech Language Pathology. The DOR will ensure that the Department of Rehabilitation Services provides evidenced-based care that meets or exceeds established standards for quality and excellence. Ensure policies and procedures are developed, administered and monitored for efficient, effective management of all programs. The DOR will actively support programs and services that are in line with department long-range strategic objectives. The DOR will be involved in the interview, selection, onboarding, and orientation of Rehabilitation Services employees. The DOR will provide frequent and regular communication with all staff and will lead constructive and corrective discussions as indicated. The DOR will serve as a role model to promote the SRMC values. The DOR will serve on interdisciplinary committees to contribute the perspective of rehabilitation medicine.

Patient care assignment may include adolescent, adult and geriatric age groups and the provision of care will include the acute inpatient units, outpatient rehabilitation, and aquatic therapy. Patient care assignment may include adolescent, adult and geriatric.

The role of DOR is one of clinical leadership, and as such, the DOR will also provide care as a Physical Therapist, Occupational Therapist, or a Speech and Language Pathologist. Please refer to these job descriptions for details of this element to the role.

Essential Functions:

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES - Maintain established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, and quality assurance programs.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT - Enhance professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, reading current literature, attending in-services, meetings and workshops.

Develops and monitors department short and long-term goals that ensure alignment with organizational True North goals, to include financial, quality of care, value to customer, growth, and patient satisfaction.

Develops and maintains unit/program policies in compliance with government rules and regulations.

Selects trains and evaluates staff; provides and coordinates staff training; works with employees to improve performance.

Provides executive leadership with regular updates of departmental operations and progress using objective goal-driven data.

Serves on multidisciplinary committees and provides valuable input toward organizational projects.

Interviews and maintains appropriate staff to meet the established regulations for safe and effective delivery of rehabilitation services.

Assures that staff adheres to established standards of practice, state laws, and supervision of staff.

Effectuates performance evaluations, personnel policies, hiring, promotion and discipline.

Serves as the Clinical Coordinator of Clinical Experiences by coordinating with regional academic therapy programs and SRMC clinical instructors for student learning opportunities.

Maintains sufficient inventory of departmental supplies.

Fosters productivity by determining employee workloads and delegating appropriate assignments.

Contributes and participates in team huddles to identify barriers and obstacles and in support of realigning processes toward organizational and department goals.

Communication Skills

Contacts are normally made with others within UNM-SRMC.

Contacts are equally within the Department of Rehabilitation Services and outside of the department working in a multidisciplinary setting.

Contacts frequently contain some discussion about confidential/sensitive matters.

Contacts are most often made face to face, but also via telephone, and the electronic medical record.

Contacts are 50% with patients and 50% with non-patients.

Required Qualifications

Must be a confident and strong leader who can work collaboratively with staff both within the Department of Rehabilitation and outside the department.

Must have strong time-management skills and maintain department goals in addition to managing patient care caseload.

Must have a strong working knowledge of departmental budgetary management.

Must be able to establish a personal and professional rapport with patients and others involved in patient’s care and in a position to understand care requirements.

Must be able to establish a work environment conducive to employee learning and growth while achieving the highest quality of patient care.

Must have excellent communication with all stakeholders; must include verbal and written.

Must be able to work in collaboration within the multidisciplinary healthcare team to assure continuity of care.

Education/Experience

Education:

Graduate of an Accredited Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy, or Speech Language Pathology Program

Licenses/Certifications:

One of the following:

Must hold a license with the New Mexico Licensing Board for your appropriate scope of practice; PT, OT, SLP.

or

Temporary license, New Mexico Licensing Board; Obtain permanent License within three months of position

CPR Certification or must obtain within 30 calendar days of date of position

Work Experience:

5 years of work experience in a multidisciplinary setting with experience in leadership, management, and managing a budget.

Preferred Educational/Experience Requirements:

Preferred experience includes acute inpatient and outpatient settings, working with a variety of orthopedic and neurologic patient diagnoses. Clinical specialties, ie. OCS, SCS, GCS, CHT.

Supervision

The position provides oversight and supervision of all department staff. The DOR will assure adherence to practice standards and maintenance of state laws and established supervision guidelines.

Conditions of Employment

Must pass a pre-employment criminal background check, reference checks and a post offer drug screen.

Must be employment eligible as verified by the U.S. Dept. of Health and Human Services Office of Inspector General (OIG) and the Government Services Administration (GSA).

Working Conditions

Typical office and/or patient care, acute care hospital environment.

Must be able to travel locally between facilities and within the surrounding community.

Occasional exposure to minimal physical risk
