Expected Areas of Competence
The Business Development/Transactions candidate will possess strong business acumen with experience in the life sciences and biopharmaceutical industry, particularly across technology platforms and pharmacodiagnostic tools. An understanding of the deal making process in the industry is required as the candidate will lead transaction related activities for partnering/licensing of Translational Medicine (TM) related opportunities (e.g. biomarker and companion diagnostic collaborations), while supporting Search & Evaluation (S&E) activities. The candidate is required to have strong interpersonal skills and work with multiple internal stakeholders to facilitate highly visible and time-sensitive business development projects. Furthermore, the candidate will provide transaction support in running business and commercial analyses and leadership in negotiation and contracting of licensing, collaboration and other Business Development opportunities for biomarkers, diagnostics and related technologies in support of BMS strategy and objectives.
Key activities
Demonstrate leadership and business acumen while collaborating closely with internal S&E, Enterprise Strategy, R&D, Finance, and Commercial, and TM stakeholders and potential external partners.
Partner with the S&E team and the relevant TM disease area leads, on the delivery of business assessments and recommendations of external opportunities, including deal proposals, valuation, deal status, and key issues of the transaction to BMS governance bodies for endorsement.
Lead or support negotiating, contracting, and executing of TM transactions depending on the complexity of the deal. Communicate key deal issues, risks, and updates to leadership and senior internal stakeholders, including collaborating with Transaction Legal in drafting and revising term sheet and contracts.
Recommend proposed deal structure and terms for transaction with moderate to low level of complexity, demonstrating an ability to learn and incorporate industry deal making trends.
Efficiently lead cross-functional team meetings, including preparing agendas, and minutes for various BD related transactions, and communicate updates to leadership.
Participate in BD external partnering events (JPM, BIO, BIO EU, BMS Partnering Days etc.) and technical / scientific meetings, including preparing materials such as presentations, FAQ and related documents.
Support Commercial/Financial Assessment:
Support project team interactions with functional representatives
Provide insights to the commercial and financial evaluation process, assumptions and outputs
Manage the development and drafting of project team deliverables and recommendations
Ensure robustness of the overall Commercial/Financial Assessment
Present to senior internal and external stakeholders.
Stay current and inform BMS stakeholders of competitive intelligence related to advances in pharmaceutical and diagnostic partnerships.
Support the communication with TM leadership team of key business development initiatives that impact TM deliverables.
Represent BMS to senior external stakeholders and collaborate with alliance management in managing and building relationships with key TM strategic partners.
Experience Desired
Advanced degree (MS, Ph.D.) in biological sciences; MBA or other advanced business degree preferred.
Minimum 7 years of experience within Pharma or Diagnostic industry and a strong preference for relevant transactions experience relating to deals in translational medicine.
Proven ability to manage multiple projects efficiently with a high degree of independence.
Prior Pharma translational medicine or Diagnostic industry experience.
Knowledge & Skills Desired
Strong working knowledge of pharmaceutical & diagnostic industry issues, trends, and their business impact.
Familiarity with key issues related to negotiation of biomarker technology, companion diagnostics and other TM related collaboration opportunities.
Works well with and exerts influence on multi-disciplinary teams. Facilitates candid dialogue and cross-functional collaboration.
Strong analytical, communication, and leadership skills.
Able to communicate effectively with senior management internally and externally.
Familiarity with reviewing and editing contracts.
