The
Maureen and Mike Mansfield Center
(the Center) invites applications for the
Deputy Director
to serve a critical role at the University of Montana. This is a senior leadership position with responsibility for managing programmatic, strategic, and administrative activities of the Center. Founded by an Act of Congress in 1983, the Mansfield Center fosters globally minded leaders of integrity in honor of Senator Mike Mansfield and his wife, Maureen Hayes Mansfield. Guided by Senator Mansfield’s example, our work emphasizes civil exchanges of ideas from a diverse range of viewpoints, the importance of democratic institutions, the integration of international relations, and the role that ethical values play in public life.
The Deputy Director works with the Executive Director to oversee administrative functions of the Center. The Deputy Director shares the duties of providing leadership in planning, implementing, and coordinating all administrative, educational, and programmatic activities of the Center. The Deputy Director is also responsible for oversight of Center operations including budgeting, personnel management, resource allocation, communications, technology, and other administrative functions. The Deputy Director makes recommendations to the Executive Director for strategic plans and policies to achieve the Center’s mission and specific programmatic goals. While the Executive Director focuses on leading the Center to fulfill mission-critical priorities and fosters collaborative relationships with a variety of partners, the Deputy Director supports these activities by overseeing the administrative and operational aspects required to implement programs and projects cultivated by those plans, priorities, and collaborations.
The incumbent reports to and assists the Executive Director but largely operates on a day-to-day basis in an independent manner and also serves as the Acting Executive Director in the Executive Director’s absence. Duties performed by the Deputy Director require skill in directing and effectively managing the work of a complex organizational unit across multiple programs. The incumbent must balance responsibilities in a complex environment and use a high level of autonomy to organize work, set priorities and program goals, delegate tasks, meet multiple deadlines, and achieve Center performance objectives efficiently and effectively. Skills are required in analyzing and finding solutions to organizational/systems problems across different program components of the Center. These skills include the ability to adapt to changing work environments with fluid program demands, staffing requirements, and emerging organizational challenges. The Deputy Director must also be willing to support Center directors in supporting programing in such ways as project implementation, relationship building, direct participant support activities, program reporting and evaluation, and other needs that may arise. The Deputy Director must be highly proficient in relating to superiors, external partners, peers, and subordinates in order to negotiate and implement program policies and find solutions to personnel and organizational challenges. It is essential that the Deputy Director have demonstrated experience working effectively in a cross-cultural setting and fostering diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.
