Summary

The Director, Clinical Trial Business Operations within Global Clinical Trial Planning & Alliance Management is a senior leader level role considered essential to the sustainability and success of the BMS R&D pipeline. This role reports to the VP, Global Clinical Trial Planning & Alliance Management and is a key member of the Global Development Operations (GDO) Management Team.

This role leads a team of GDO employees who have demonstrated and core expertise in clinical trial business planning and execution, including portfolio planning and management, country trial allocation, organizational and portfolio governance, resourcing decisions through multiple models, operational and business implications of clinical trial design choices, and trial-level milestone and risk management.

Specifically, the Senior Director, Clinical Trial Business Operations is accountable for:

Providing the leadership of critical business support activities within Global Development Operations (GDO). Responsible for assuring business partnerships, internally and externally, are managed in support of the BMS R&D portfolio of clinical trials to enable effective delivery.

Influencing and driving leaders of key enabling functions including Business Insights & Analytics (BIA) and Research & Development Strategic Partnership (RDSP) to develop the GDO strategy related to the governance and execution of the global country allocation aligned with the medical and commercial asset strategy. This will be an enterprise-wide critical activity involving leadership from hub countries around the world.

Developing and implementing data-driven, holistic processes and tools to optimize clinical trial site selection across GDO. Strategically expands BMS’ pool of sites and investigators and ensures its effective utilization.

Establishing processes and framework to make sourcing decisions on a portfolio and per-trial level. Directly makes decisions on sourcing model for each trial.

Overseeing the development and management of metrics to assess performance of the business and the clinical trials, shaping organizational goals in partnership with RDSP. Ensures transparency of GDO performance and delivery within the function and across the enterprise.

Synthesizing, interpreting, and integrating data and information from internal and external sources to provide clear recommendations and strengthen data-driven decision making by GDO leaders.

Developing, validating, and implementing effective resource algorithms across GDO in partnership with BIA. Identifying, building and maintaining the workforce management plan to assure both resource and external partnership needs are in line with the R&D portfolio, flexible yet sustainable.

Leading the resource and workforce management plan globally for GDO to assure the role, functional and organizational resource, workload and capacity are understood and that organizational priorities are effectively managed to.

Setting the direction for GDO, assuring that trial prioritization is understood and that the organization is focused on meeting the delivery in accordance with that prioritization globally. This role will be responsible to assure that key performance indicators are known and managed to globally.

Supporting the development and implementation a culture of core business understanding across a global organization whose focus is in clinical trial execution.

Leading a team of industry professionals, who are experts in their respective fields. Provides ongoing feedback, coaching, and career development, including engagement and retention support to staff in order to maximize their potential. Empowers and holds GDO management to high quality performance and delivery of the business.

May represent the Company in key interactions with external partners as part of any business related committee or industry group.

Serving as a leader across R&D, and developing strong and productive working relationships with key stakeholders throughout BMS with the ability to think strategically across a broad portfolio and effectively express his/her views to senior management.

Ensuring GDO representation as needed in governance or strategic teams or committees (preparatory materials, direct participation, or representative).

Establishing and managing per-trial milestone and progress planning and management, including proactive risk identification, in partnership with the Global Clinical Trial Strategy & Operations.

Engaging and energizing employees through communication of goals, priorities and other business critical information as well as focus on employee value proposition, development and retention activities.

Developing and promoting a work place culture that values diversity of thought, promotes integrity and creates an atmosphere that supports coaching and fosters accountability.

Experience and Expertise Required

Significant global clinical trial expertise and a successful track record of leading through influence, working across complex, global organizational matrices.

Bachelor’s degree required with an advanced degree preferred. At least 8 years of relevant industry experience, with substantial experience of managing staff.

Leader in the strategy development, business measures that enable effective drug development processes. For example, clinical trial resource workforce management, country & site feasibility, financial reporting, departmental goal setting.

A deep understanding of the systems and processes that support clinical trial execution, harnessing efficiencies and standards that enable business success.

Demonstrated partnership across various collaborative forums, CROs, SMOs and/or local site networks.

Diverse and sufficient technical expertise to be a credible interface to all global development and business partners (medical, development, commercial, regulatory & quality etc.)

Broad intelligence of the clinical trial environment across key regions, and anticipation of future trends and impact.

Demonstrated influential leadership and communication capabilities with a proven ability to engage, manage, develop and inspire a team.
