GENERAL

PURPOSE:

Butzel Long, a 165-year old full-service law firm with offices in Detroit, Ann Arbor, Oakland County, Lansing, New York, and Washington, D.C., is looking for a Human Resources Manager to manage legal support staff while providing valuable support to clients and practice areas. This position will also support key areas of human resources including employee compliance, employee relations, performance management program, payroll, 401(k) administration, and delivering results on various HR department projects in coordination with the Chief Human Resources Officer (CHRO).

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Manage legal support teams with workflow and assignments, handle conflicts between employees, maintain and coordinate employee recognition programs, provide ongoing feedback with employees through regular meetings and disciplinary actions as needed.

Implement annual performance management program; conduct annual salary surveys; analyze compensation; monitor performance management program and revise as necessary in consultation with the CHRO.

Assist in organizational training and development efforts for legal support staff including skills assessments and program development in coordination with the Technical Training Specialist.

Develop, recommend, and implement HR policies and procedures; prepare and maintain handbook on practices and procedures for the Firm in conjunction with the CHRO.

Participate in developing department goals, objectives, and procedures. Work with Firm managers to coach, counsel and guide them on firm policies, procedures and counsel before the execution of employee disciplinary actions in consultation with the CHRO.

Prepare and participate in the Firm’s Thrift Plan annual audit. Work with auditors and the CHRO regarding ERISA requirements such as annual 5500 filing, SAR's, SPD, SMM, and amendments to plans. Daily administration of 401(k) benefit administration.

Establish and maintain department records and reports. Monitor and manage Firm PTO through tracking system and reports to payroll. Maintain and distribute report of same to staff.

Work with payroll team to audit payroll and track HR changes. Acts as a resource for Payroll contact to ensure understanding and compliance with benefit and HR policies and regulations.

Works in tandem with other departments, Firm leadership and various committees on differing firm initiatives such as DEI, programs for staff changes, recommendations of firm policies, incentive programs, etc.

Performs other incidental and related duties as required and assigned

KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

Involved in Firm- wide human resources planning and development.

Provide functional guidance for administrative support needs. Possess strong conflict management skills.

Ability to adapt to changing priorities and maintain a productive and committed workforce.

Ability to manage and administer a broad range of HR related tasks including but not limited to resolving complaints and counseling employees while using judgment that is consistent with standards and Firm policies.

Demonstrated ability to manage various projects and initiatives in a timely fashion.

Knowledge of benefit administration including 401(k), health and other various benefits.

Extensive knowledge regarding state and federal employment laws and compliance requirements.

EDUCATION,

EXPERIENCE

AND/OR TRAINING:

Minimum of a bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Human Resources, Business, or Organization Development or equivalent.

Five plus years of progressive leadership experience in Human Resources positions.

Human Resource certification a plus.
