The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Hematology and Oncology is seeking an Associate Director (AD) for Population Science. This identified candidate will hold a faculty position in the Department of Hematology and Oncology of a rank commensurate with experience. 

 

The Division of Hematology and Oncology supports the University of Cincinnati Medical Center (UCMC), West Chester Hospital (WCH), University of Cincinnati Cancer Institute and the Cincinnati Department of Veterans Affairs Medical Center. The Division consists of 18 clinical faculty members. The Division includes multiple clinical centers of excellence, a Hemophilia Center, a Therapeutic phase I program and serves as a referral center for the Tri-State region. Eight divisional research labs provide venues for translational research studies.  In addition, ample opportunities exist on campus for access to resources in immunobiology, laboratory medicine, transfusion medicine, cell mediated therapy and cancer biology at the University of Cincinnati Medical College, the Hoxworth Blood Center or the Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The purpose of the Associate Director (AD) for Population Science role within the University of Cincinnati Cancer Center (UCCC) is to manage and strategically develop the population-based research portfolio and cancer control programs of the center, as well as, advance a shared vision for cancer prevention and control program across the University and partner institutions comprising the UCCC with the goal of strategically aligning and focusing resources and efforts, and reducing the cancer burden.  Specifically, the role involves:

 

*Developing initiatives that integrate population-based research into other UCCC-funded programs and institutional research efforts; *Partnering with key units across the University of Cincinnati, UC Health, and Cincinnati Children's to develop bi-directional engagement of UCCC members between and within the three UCCC research programs (basic, clinical, and population science ), the Community Outreach and Engagement (COE) program, and the Cancer Research Training, Education and Career Enhancement core; *Increasing the impact of UCCC discoveries and information on the diverse communities in its defined catchment area; and *Assisting the UCCC Co-Directors in identifying and recruiting exceptional population-based scientists with an interest in addressing incidence, mortality, outcomes, survivorship, disparities, and overall cancer burden in the UCCC catchment area.

As a member of the UCCC, senior leadership team the AD participates in key decision-making committees related to resource allocation, strategic planning, recruitment, and institutional initiatives for cancer research at large. The AD collaborates with other senior leaders of the UCCC to support and advance the vision of the Co-Directors and team. Together, the leadership team maximizes the cancer-relevant research potential and positive urban impact to the community of the University of Cincinnati, UC Health, and CCHMC while also identifying new ways to prevent, control and treat cancer and provide specialized care to underserved populations.

PRIMARY/CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES

*Assists the UCCC Co-Directors with identifying and mentoring University of Cincinnati researchers across institutes/departments/divisions and Colleges/Schools with an interest in cancer prevention and control research and recruiting new population-based scientists to expand cancer prevention and control capabilities within the Center. *Facilitates integration among members, senior leaders, and the UC Health system to promote collaborations leading to translation of cancer prevention, control and population science into the clinical and survivorship arenas, especially into cancer disease-focused working groups/centers of excellence. *Collaborates with UC Health system clinical leadership on population, outcomes, survivorship, and community health initiatives, functioning as a subject matter expert to facilitate positive urban impact. *Ensures active participation by UCCC population-based scientists in ongoing programmatic activities within the cancer prevention, control and population science program; meets regularly with research program leaders/co-leaders to develop strategic research priorities, goals, and initiatives.  Monitors research and publication productivity of the program's membership *Develops collaborative cancer prevention, control and population research within UCCC, resulting in peer-reviewed grants and publications in impactful journals in the field. *Participates actively in the recruitment of the UCCC Associate Director for Community Outreach and Engagement (COE), and works closely with the AD for COE to integrate and create synergies between the activities and initiatives of COE and those of the cancer prevention, control and population science program. *Collaborates with the UCCC Associate Director for Community Outreach & Engagement to ensure the translation and dissemination of evidence-based cancer prevention and control approaches. *Works with the Associate Director for Education & Training to expand cancer-focused professional education, training and career enhancement opportunities within the population sciences. *Collaborates with Associate Director for Shared Resources and other institutional leaders regarding the development of necessary resources, tools, infrastructure, data acquisition/access, etc. to enable cancer prevention, control and population researchers to be successful at UC and produce high quality, competitive research.

DUTIES CONTINUED

*Fosters links between UCCC and the leadership of local, state, and regional health departments and its cancer-focused initiatives. *Regularly attends and actively participates in monthly UCCC Executive Committee meetings (all Associate Directors); the Associate Director for Population Sciences should regularly enunciate progress toward meeting strategic plan goals related to cancer population sciences in UCCC. *Develops a five-year strategic plan to promote, foster, and expand cancer prevention, control and population science efforts within UCCC. *Identifies University of Cincinnati population-based scientists who meet UCCC membership criteria and work with UCCC administration to formalize membership within the cancer prevention, control and population science program; promotes their participation in programmatic activities. Coaches/mentors those who are not progressing towards full scientific membership or maintaining current membership status. *Meets with the Chairs/Deans/Leaders of relevant University of Cincinnati departments/divisions and/or colleges/schools (inclusive of UC faculty at CCHMC) to discuss UCCC's strategic plans regarding cancer prevention, control and population science efforts and identify areas where partnerships can be built and resources co-invested (e.g., recruitment). *Develops and promotes inter-institutional, collaborative research opportunities utilizing UCCC's population science capabilities, with the anticipation of submitting pilot research grants and/or extramural submissions. *Coordinates strategic planning retreats and/or working group meetings to promote collaborative research and professional education and training opportunities. *Explore opportunities for joint initiative(s) with local, state, and regional health departments/services and/or state cancer plan that would strengthen cancer prevention and/or control efforts in the state. *Ensures all cancer prevention, control and population science activities are in line with the mission, vision, core values, strategic goals, and strategies to achieve the goals expected of an NCI-designated Cancer Center *Represents the UCCC in national meetings and professional groups of importance to build awareness of UCCC for recruitment of faculty talent and to enhance the UCCC national brand among colleagues at other NCI-designated cancer centers.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

*Terminal degree - PhD or MD/PhD *Sr. Academic level scientist with prior history of tenure track position *Extensive track record as a federally-funded investigator focused on population-based cancer research with publication in relevant journals in the field *Strong leadership skills and a management style that supports the mentoring of young investigators and development of the next generation of cancer-focused population scientists *Demonstrated experience working in and fostering a diverse and inclusive faculty, staff, and student environment or commitment to do so as a faculty member at the University of Cincinnati

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

*Previous scientific leadership role at an NCI-designated Cancer Center *Publication record in high impact journals or of significant impact for the field *Extensive track record of NCI-specific funding
